10 for 10: Olorien Community Clinic

A decade ago, Sandy and Karen Baird, while on a mission in Arusha, Tanzania with University of Texas students and missionary friends Vernon and Mary Smith, met Dr. and Mrs. Byemba. They had experienced a harrowing escape from the Congo civil war and found their way to Arusha as part of a UN refugee program.

During this trip, Texas nursing student Lindsey Griffin gained a God-sized vision for the church to start a medical clinic and Dr. Byemba was clearly the answer God provided.

NHI leadership encouraged Lindsey to step out in courageous faith and God provided $45,000 to purchase the property. In just a few short months the Olorien Community Clinic began!

Ten years on the clinic has grown! Today, it provides a full-service medical facility including an in-house lab, imaging center, and pharmacy, The staff has ministered compassionately and skillfully to over 200,000 patients! Our resident counselor is able to share the love and hope of Christ with a predominately Islamic culture and many have come to know Jesus as Savior. In addition to all of this our mobile clinic offers medical camps regardless of distance, weather, or environment.

By God's grace, He answered a college student's prayer by providing a skilled doctor and staff, raising up faithful supporters, and changing thousands of lives!

PRAYERFULLY CONSIDER DONATING IN 2 SPECIFIC WAYS:

- $40 will provide annual medical costs for one family
- $140 will provide for a child's minor surgery

10 for 10: Kadie's Story

Pictured above: Frank, Victor, Kadie, and Patrick.

Meet Kadie Thomas. Kadie's husband passed away four years ago, leaving her family in severely challenging circumstances. Feeding and clothing the kids was difficult but medical care and schooling became unrealistic. She began attending church where she gave her life to Christ. Later she was introduced to Pastor Rogers who spent time with Kadie, helping the family when possible.

They prayed together and asked God to provide relief. Three months later her young boys Frank, Victor, and Patrick all moved into New Hope's Karen Baird Children’s Home.

The boys were welcomed immediately by the other children who took them in and helped them through the transition. Within the first few months of the boys leaving, Kadie fell ill needing stomach surgery. Thankfully her surgery was successful and she is currently in recovery.

She expressed to New Hope Sierra Leone project leader, Phil D’Entremont, that her children would most likely have been given away to strangers during this period as she would not have been able to provide any care to them. However, since coming to Christ, God has worked through their lives and delivered the boys from a hopeless future. Although she continues to have struggles, she is thankful that her boys are on a path to a brighter future and surrounded by Christ-loving people. She is thankful for all Pastor Rogers and NHI have done for her family.

New Hope’s mission is to create paths out of spiritual and physical poverty for some of the world's most underprivileged children and families. Would you consider partnering with New Hope to support the needs of Sierra Leone Children's Home financially and prayerfully?

Q&A with Pastor Francis

Pastor Francis Rogers is the founder and director of the Karen Baird Children's Home in Moriba Town, Sierra Leone. Established in 2009 with 26 kids, the home more than doubled after the construction of a second hostel in 2010. Pastor Francis asks we pray for Godly leadership under a God-sized vision for the future, including reaching more children who will disciple many others in the country and beyond!

NHI: Where do you think the ministry would be without New Hope's partnership?
Pastor Francis:
The orphan ministry would not have materialized apart from NHI. No other organization ever expressed interest in partnering with us. NHI picked the project from the beginning in 2009 and has consistently funded everything and brought a change that makes the children's home a shining example of Christ-like love; admired by our government through the ministry of social welfare, children and gender affairs. God choose NHI and we are grateful.

NHI: Explain your greatest challenge in Life?
Pastor Francis: The challenge of running a conscious soul winning ministry in a bedeviled, fetish nation with different satanic traditions with a highly illiterate populace. A culture where child abuse is rife, where the lives of missionaries are under constant threat, where child marriage is celebrated and many suffering children abound mounting pressure on us to care for more which we cant do because of limited resources. The challenge of hopeless children fending for themselves in the dust bin while some end up as child prostitutes.

NHI: What is the greatest success NHI has been part of?
Pastor Francis: The entire construction of the orphanage facility was done by NHI to accommodate homeless and hopeless orphan kids, while providing much needed food, clothing, medical and educational needs. Twelve years on, some of these once hopeless orphan kids have emerged as college graduates, communication engineers, welders and other relevant figures in the community. Some of them from deep muslim backgrounds have emerged as carriers of the Gospel to their villages of origin. These once hostile communities to the gospel have now allowed churches to be planted there because of the success of their once hopeless kids. NHI intervention here brought success with more to come.

NHI: How can NHI improve things?
Pastor Francis: Privatize the school, recruit qualified teachers and raise the standard of the school for the greater benefit of our children and community children who will meet the cost. Also, to engage the services of qualified solar engineers to solve our energy problem so that we can divert money been spent on fuel to other much needed areas.

NHI: What is your greatest success in life?
Pastor Francis: My greatest success in life is seeing once hopeless children become useful instruments for God in their communities. Homeless children that now have a home, once occults priests now live in Christ. This all I have ever wanted and all I am living for.

10 for 10: Dominic's Story

New Hope met Dominic when a medical team from Detroit, along with ministry founders Sandy and Karen Baird, and Dr. Byemba from the Arusha Medical Clinic, Tanzania were finally able to return to Kibera's mobile medical clinic after two years. Due to the pandemic, our team was met by overwhelming medical needs. By God's timing and grace the team met Dominic. This is his story...

Meet Dominic Mutua, a seven-year-old boy who, with his mother, came across the New Hope mobile clinic in Kibera in January 2022. At age 4, Dominic developed swelling of his left jaw that progressed into significant swelling of his left arm. He also experienced bony abnormalities in his cervical spine, leaving him in constant pain and getting progressively weaker. His mother had brought him to countless free clinics but to no avail nor future hope. Sadly, people near his home beat him when his mother was away. She can no longer work in order to protect her son. Their family has disowned Dominic due to his illness and fear he is cursed. His mother struggles to provide for Dominic and his 12-year-old brother.

Dominic's family is in a desperate situation, in need of a miracle. New Hope feels called to help Dominic and his family and show them God’s love. Together, we can make this possible.

A medical evaluation is underway at Nairobi General Hospital. Dominic is under the care of Dr. Nyambura, a pediatric hematologist-oncologist. Thus far, Dominic has completed full-body CT scans and basic blood work. His CT scans returned abnormal. His diagnosis remains unknown. There are concerning findings in his cervical spine and brain that need urgently addressing, requiring evaluations by a neurologist and neurosurgeon. His medical and living costs remain unknown.

New Hope’s mission is to create paths out of spiritual and physical poverty for some of the world's most underprivileged children and families. Would you consider partnering with New Hope to support Dominic financially and prayerfully?
